What is Internet of Things?

Internet of Things (IoT) is everything in the world that is connected to the internet. It can send and receive information and make things smart. IoT devices offer us greater control over home appliances, insights into resource consumption habits, streamline business processes, connecting people around us and improve our living environment. For example: Google Home
Google Home

Google Home requires a Wi-Fi network, nearby socket as well as a compatible smart device. Google Home allows users to control devices and features in home using compatible smart plugs or switches. By connecting lights with smart switches, users will be able to control the power and brightness with Google Home.

Google Home is a voice-controlled speaker that can play music, control smart home gadgets, answer trivia questions, add events to calendar and the list goes on!
Google Assistant (Sending Information)
Google Assistant offers voice commands to complete a number of tasks. To begin with, simply say “OK, Google.” or “Hey, Google.” then speak up to 3 consecutive commands in 1 sentence. For example, “OK, Google. Girls Like You on Spotify and set the volume to 10”
Stream Music from Spotify (Receiving Information)
Spotify is a digital music service that offer users to access to millions of song around the world. As Spotify is integrated with Google Assistant, the voice commands then linked to user’s Spotify account and play the music. Within 4 seconds, user completed 2 consecutive commands.

IoT Potentials
As IoT devices are a part of the larger concept of home automation, which include lighting, heating and air conditioning, media and security systems. Google Home could design energy savings by automatically ensuring lights and electronics are turned off to reduce energy consumption. All in all, saving energy is everybody’s responsibility!
Have you tried Google Home before? Personally I do have a Google Home Mini and it is really easy-to-use and it brings conveniences to my daily life. Comment down below and share with me what are the ways we could utilise IoT and make this world a better place! ☺️ Cheers!
Hi Peili! That is a good write up on internet of things! As we all know the advancement in technology has made us inseparable from internet! Everything we do is link to the internet, this has “shrunk the world” significantly as it made us connected to one another through the use of internet! As more and more smart devices are being created, do you think this will change the current marketing scene? what are some of positive and negative impact of this change?

Hello Ernest! Thank you for your comment!
I agree with you that we are inseparable from the internet! 🤣 In my opinion, I feel that we are too over-reliance on technology devices. With the cashless payment method, I can simply leave my house without any cash or bank cards. How convenient is that? However, smart technology is the dangers of distraction. Many companies engaged in mobile marketing and it has become very competitive over the years. Companies are running out of ideas to stand out from their competitors. Do you agree with me? Hello Peili! After reading your post, I am very tempted to get a Google Home for my family.
There are many pros and cons with using IoT. According to this article (https://www.keyinfo.com/pros-and-cons-of-the-internet-of-things-iot/) but the con that struck me the most is the “technologically dependent life”. As our generation uses more advanced technology, do you think it’ll negatively affect the future generations in terms of basic human interaction skills? And would they be controlled by technology in future?
Hope to hear from you soon 🙂

Hello Brenda! Thank you for reading my blog post!
In my opinion, I think that we are all over-reliant on technology! As for future generations, I personally think that there will be challenges in basic human interaction skills. Tablets have become increasingly popular in preschool and early-years learning. Children (the ‘tablet generation’) acquire that capacity by playing and interacting with peers and exploring their immediate surroundings to experience real-life interactions. (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/02/02/using-an-ipad-or-smartphone-can-harm-a-toddlers-brain-researchers-says/) Do you agree that parents should limit the child’s screen time? Hi Peili! After reading your article, I am so tempted to get a Google Home myself!
IoT undeniably made life so much more convenient for everyone, both in daily lives and for business purposes and I love how it can be utilised to save energy as well! However, a huge concern for smart assistant such as Google Home is regarding to how these devices are always listening despite not being activated (https://www.inc.com/jason-aten/google-is-absolutely-listening-to-your-conversations-it-just-confirms-why-people-dont-trust-big-tech.html). What do you think about that?

Hello Windy! Thank you for reading my blog! 😉
In my opinion, I feel that big technology companies are getting harder to trust in terms of security. Like Apple, iSight camera lights up green when it’s on. Hackers can use a piece of software called a Remote Administration Tool (RAT) to get around that security feature. RAT allows hackers to control a computer from anywhere on the Internet to turn on the iSight camera without turning on the light.
