The 21st Century God – Google

“Just Google it!” How many times in a day you caught yourself saying that? You ask Google any question, you will get an answer instantly. Nobody knows better than Google. Google is dominating in the search engine market and certainly the best search engine in the world. (Trust me, I miss Google the most when I was visiting China)

Be on the first page to capture attention

When user search particular keyword on Google, a list of results appeared on the screen. But how does the user decide which information to retrieve on? Well, 95% of web traffic retrieve information from the first page of search engine results page.

So now, imagine you are the owner of a growing and thriving leather bag making business. Your goal is to increase visibility on the newly developed website. How do you make sure the website appear on the first page of Google search engine results page?

Google SEO

Yes, the answer is to engage Google SEO! SEO refers to search engine optimisation, or the process of optimising a website in order to make it easy to find via Google. SEO refers to the improvement of unpaid results, and excludes direct traffic and the purchase of paid placement.

Google SEO – Keyword Search

Keyword research is a practice of SEO and first step to optimising website for certain keyword. Without it, the website will be nowhere to be seen in the search engine. No idea what keyword to register? Google Trends offers the search terms commonly used by the target audience.

For instance, let’s say that the website has a new blog post on how to make a leather bag. In order to get the content in front of the right target audience, try to optimize the blog post so that it will show up as a top result for anyone who searches for the phrase “make a leather bag.”

To sum it all, SEO is essential to a business’ success by gaining target audience’s attention and keyword research help to increases the visibility of website.

  1. Google is indeed the 21st century God. Google tracks everything that you do online (https://medium.com/futuresin/google-tracks-everything-f39ecb130464)! With the acquisation of YouTube in 2006, Google controls the majority of internet searches (https://gs.statcounter.com/search-engine-market-share). It is highly convenient that a search engine has the virtual monopoly of the search engine market, however I cant stop to wonder if there are potential problems with this monopoly. What do you think?

    1. Hey Sheng Kai! Thank you for sharing the interesting articles with me! 😄

When companies have that much control over an industry, it becomes a problem, a big one. There would be absolutely nothing to stop Google from banning competitors or industry players from their platform. For example, Google banned the fastest growing social media site Gab.ai from its Android-Google Play Store. (https://medium.com/@mckenzieja/google-has-a-monopoly-problem-aae92598789d)

However, there are many benefits of a monopoly technology company. (https://www.barrons.com/articles/big-tech-companies-modern-monopolies-google-facebook-51552076382). After reading the benefits, do you agree that its benefits outweigh its costs? Let me know your thoughts! Cheeeeeers! 🍹

    1. Hello Darius! Thank you for your kind comment!

In my opinion, start-up businesses need to build brand awareness and recognition. To do so, start-up business should create brand identity that is simple yet unique, invest in a logo that has the power to stick and signify the brand. (Read more: https://www.google.com.sg/amp/s/www.entrepreneur.com/amphtml/294595) Brand awareness is important when offering new products. SEO does not only build brand awareness, it generates word-of-mouth (WOM) and eventually increase sales. Do you agree ? ☺️

  3. Interesting read! I didn’t know I was relying so much on Google until one day when Google was down and I felt sooo lost. That’s probably why people say “Google is your Best Friend”!

I 100% agree with you on how SEO is crucial to businesses. Personally, I can’t remember the last time I did a google search and went past the first page of search results and this can show how effective SEO is in terms of increasing visibility and reaching your audience. What other methods do you think companies can use to increase their visibility on the web?

    1. Hi Windy! Yes! I couldn’t agree with you more, Google is indeed our best friend! Other than SEO, there are 3 other methods to boost the visibility of their website. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/jiawertz/2017/01/19/4-things-you-can-do-today-to-boost-your-websites-google-ranking/#7eebd41c163f)

Firstly, create a link building strategy! Backlinks are hyperlinks from one web page to another website. Backlinks pass equity to your site, think of it as a vote of recommendation. Backlinks are the most important factor in determining web search ranking.

Secondly, increase web speed. People probably exited the tab when the load time for the webpage is TOOOOOO slow, it resulted that the website won’t rank high in search results.

Lastly, update the website frequently. Publish blog posts on the latest topics and trends within the industry, which helps search engine ranking in the long run, and the new content gives customers a reason to return to the website.

I hope you enjoyed and learned something new! Cheers!!! 🍺
